How Much Car Insurance Should You Buy?

Provided By: CarInsurance.com Auto Insurance Articles
Last updated 4:16 AM Mar-14-2009

Car insurance is not very exciting. Depending on which state you live in, it could be a smaller or larger piece of your budget than your neighbors across state lines.

How much insurance should you buy? Any insurance agent worthy of their salt will tell you that you should buy as much as you can afford. While this is a good rule of thumb, it is about as useful as a stockbroker’s tip to buy low and sell high. It might be sound logic but it does not get you any closer to an educated decision. A few filters need consideration in order to make that educated decision. First, what is the state required minimum coverage where you live? Second, what does the minimum cover? Third, what other coverage is available and can you afford it? Fourthly, what are you protecting?

You can use our easy Insurance Coverage Calculator or get an auto insurance quote to see the recommended coverage levels.

What is the minimum for your state?

You can get up to date state minimum requirements by following this link and selecting your state.

The first two figures refer to Bodily Injury Liability Limits. For example, 20/40 means coverage up to $20,000 for each person injured in an accident, up to a maximum of $40,000 forth entire accident, and then you could have 20/40/10 with $10,000 worth of coverage for property damage.

What do the minimums cover?

Now that you know what your state requires, what are you actually covered for once you purchase the minimum? Using the coverage definitions that follow, find the types of coverage required and see what your state says is the accepted minimum.

Coverage Definitions

Bodily Injury Liability covers other people's bodily injuries or death for which you are responsible. It also provides for a legal defense if another party in the accident files a lawsuit against you. Claims for bodily injury may be for such things as medical bills, loss of income or pain and suffering. In the event of a serious accident, you want enough insurance to cover a judgment against you in a lawsuit, without jeopardizing your personal assets. Bodily injury liability covers injury to people, not your vehicle. Therefore, it's good idea to have the same level of coverage for all of your cars. Bodily Injury Liability does NOT cover you or other people on your policy. Coverage is limited to the terms and conditions contained in the policy.

Comprehensive covers your vehicle, and sometimes other vehicles you maybe driving for losses resulting from incidents other than collision. For example, comprehensive insurance covers damage to your car if it is stolen; or damaged by flood, fire, or animals. Pays to fix your vehicle less the deductible you choose. To keep your premiums low, select as high a deductible as you feel comfortable paying out of pocket. Coverage is limited to the terms and conditions contained in the policy.

Collision covers damage to your car when your car hits, or is hit by, another vehicle, or other object. Pays to fix your vehicle less the deductible you choose. To keep your premiums low, select as large a deductible as you feel comfortable paying out of pocket. For older cars, consider dropping this coverage, since coverage is normally limited to the cash value of your car. Coverage is limited to the terms and conditions contained in the policy.

Medical Payments covers medical expenses to you and your passengers injured in an accident. There may also be coverage if as a pedestrian a vehicle injures you. Does NOT matter who is at fault. Coverage is limited to the terms and conditions contained in the policy.

Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury covers bodily injuries to you and your passengers when the other person has no insurance or not enough insurance in a crash that is not your fault. In some states, there is also uninsured motorist coverage for damage to your vehicle. Given the large number of uninsured motorists, this is very important coverage to have, even in states with no-fault insurance. Coverage is limited to the terms and conditions contained in the policy

Personal Injury Protection covers within the specified limits, the medical, hospital and funeral expenses of the insured, others in his vehicles and pedestrians struck by him. The basic coverage for the insured's own injuries on first-party basis, without regard to fault. It is only available in certain states.

Property Damage Liability covers you if your car damages someone else's property. Usually it is their car, but it could be a fence, a house or any other property damaged in an accident. It also provides you with legal defense if another party files a lawsuit against you. It is a good idea to purchase enough of this insurance to cover the amount of damage your car might do to another vehicle or object. Coverage is limited to the terms and conditions contained in the policy.

Rental Car Reimbursement covers renting a car if your car isn't drivable or while your car is being repaired because of a covered accident.

What else is available and can you afford it?

Did you come across a coverage and think, "I need that but it isn't required by state law" when you were reviewing the coverage definitions? Chances are you did. Can your budget afford the additional expense of these protections? Alternatively, maybe more to the point can you afford NOT to have these additional protections? At CarInsurance.com it is easy to get multiple quotes all with a click of your mouse. Moreover, during the quoting process, it is simple to add or remove coverage to see how additional coverage will affect your budget.

You can learn more about Insurance Coverages by following this link.

What are you protecting?

What assets need to be protected from being plucked away if you cause injury or damage? A) Your car itself. If this is a significant asset, or at least the bank you owe money to thinks so, then you will need comprehensive and collision. B) Your net worth. Do you have an enormous net worth to protect. If so, either take it out of your name and put it into a trust or buy all the insurance you can. If you have little or nothing to protect, then you can get by with less and still be financially responsible.

However, after you determine how much protection to get, always ask how much more it is for the next level higher. Very often, you can get significantly more coverage for very little cost.

Car insurance is not flashy. There is no "wow" factor and the opposite gender is not going to be impressed by the size of your policy. Nevertheless, not having enough can be the difference between financial stability and financial ruin. For what its worth, CarInsurance.com finds financial stability incredibly appealing.

Cheapest Vehicle Insurance Rate - More Tips For Massive Savings

Cheapest vehicle insurance rate: You can save a great deal on your auto insurance policy by making use of some other tips I've discovered. Here they are for you to make massive savings...

1. Running a business through the internet is a lot cheaper than a brick and mortar approach. By extension, insurance providers spend less online and therefore give a massive discount of about 15% for those who buy their policy online. If you'll save 15% for buying online then it's certainly highly advisable.

But do ensure you do NOT present false information. Insurers are mandated by law to cancel any policy once they can prove that the policy holder gave false details.

Don't also forget to confirm your preferred insurer's rating and standing with your state's department of insurance and other financial rating institutions.

2. Folks who have more than one car will make reasonable savings if they insure all those cars with the same insurance company. It's advisable to insure all your vehicles with the same insurer unless you have a better bargain for a number of your cars with another insurer. Doing some shopping and then checking with what you'll save with a multi-vehicle discount is a good way to be sure if this serves your best interest. But however you look at it, a multi-vehicle discount is one way to pay less.

3. Many insurance carriers will give you a discount if you join an auto club. Although you shouldn't expect to attract massive discounts for this, each small discount you can garner will add up to much on the long run.

4. There are cars that cost far more to give adequate auto insurance coverage. So as you check out the wonderful specs of the car you want to buy don't forget to ask costs too much to insure. Avoid any car that has a high theft rate and/or a poor crash rating.

Furthermore, it will also take much more to insure a car that costs a lot to fix or repair. Asking the right questions will make it easy for you to avoid expensive-to-insure cars and attract more affordable rates.

5. Do your utmost to always ensure your policy never lapses. It will sentence you to high premiums for a long time. This happens to some individuals while they are about switching to another insurance company.

One way to be certain you do NOT make this costly mistake is to let your old policy keep running until you've confirmed that the new policy is fully in place. As simple as this may seem, a lot of individuals are bearing the pain of exorbitant rates because of just a little negligence.

6. Get and compare as many auto insurance quotes as you can lay hands on. There are as many as 2,000 insurance carriers in the US and you'll need to get a wide range of quotes to do a good job of covering their various offers. And, you know what? With quotes sites, you can get five or more quotes per requesting and all it will take you is just about five minutes per site.

Auto Insurance Company - The Dirty Little Secret Your Broker is Hiding From You

Auto Insurance Company - The Dirty Little Secret Your Broker is Hiding From You
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Alexis_Jensen]Alexis Jensen

You're paying too much for your auto insurance and your broker knows it. In fact, there's a very simple way for you to slash the cost of your monthly premium and your broker is deathly afraid you're going to find out about it. Well, it's time your broker was put out of his or her misery and it's high time that you learned just how incredibly simple it is for you to save 30% or more each and every month on your auto policy.

But before we get to the Big Secret that will instantly save you 30% or more month after month, let's talk about a few other simple - but important - things you can do to trim the cost of your coverage even more!

Do you have any idea how much money it costs your company to prepare, print and then mail a bill to you every month? It costs a lot more than you probably think and if you save your company the cost of mailing you a bill they'll gladly pass most of the savings along to you in the form of a lower premium every month. All you need to do is to set up an auto pay plan so your premium is paid automatically every month directly out of your bank account.

Are you married? Did you know that women pay less for their auto protection than men do? It's true. So if you list the wife as the primary driver of every vehicle in the family and the husband as the secondary driver you can save quite a bit.

How many rush hour miles you drive to and from work every month also affects how much you pay for your coverage. If you join (or start) a carpool at work and you carpool with just one other driver you will cut your monthly rush hour driving in half and that can save you a tremendous amount on your monthly premium.

Increasing your deductible will decrease your premium instantly. Just be sure that you don't over-do it and promise to pay a larger deductible than you can actually afford.

So what is the Deep Dark Secret for saving 30% every month on your premium? It turns out that the secret for saving all this cash every month is actually the easiest thing you can do. All you need to do is to buy your auto policy online.

That's it. How can something so simple save you so much money? For two reasons. First, online brokers have almost no overhead that you have to pay for. No overhead means they can sell policies at wholesale prices all day every day and still show a good profit.

Also, online brokers have a whole lot of competition and the only way to stay competitive under conditions like that is to reduce prices as low as humanly possible.

The result is that for once in your life YOU WIN! You are in the right place at the right time for saving a boatload of money!

Oh, there's one more reason you'll save money when you buy from the comfort of your own home. There won't be a live agent sitting across the table from you talking you into buying more and more coverage that you don't really need and certainly can't afford. That alone is reason enough for most people to switch to an online broker.

I've spent countless hours researching the best deals for online insurance and I've managed to find the absolutely lowest prices possible. But don't take my word for it. Get online yourself and see with your own eyes just how great the savings can be.

How to Compare Low Cost Automobile Insurance in Massachusetts

How to Compare Low Cost Automobile Insurance in Massachusetts
By Alexis Jensen

It's the law: if you are going to drive a motorized vehicle on Massachusetts state roads you must buy automobile insurance. Failure to buy automobile insurance can result in stiff fines and penalties and the possible confiscation of your driver's license and the impounding of your automobile.

Who wants to risk going through all that when there are several simple things you can do which can lower your cost of automobile insurance and allow you to compare low cost automobile insurance in Massachusetts and save even more?

So what can you do? Several things. Even if only one of the following suggestions applies to you, your savings over the course of a year could add up to hundreds of dollars.

Keep your car in a garage at night.

Have your monthly payments made automatically from your checking account. This saves your insurance company time and money and they pass a small savings on to you.

Carpool. If you drive back and forth to work everyday a good portion of your monthly automobile insurance premium covers the time you spend in heavy rush-hour traffic. If you carpool and cut the number of days you commute each month your automobile insurance premium will also be cut.

If you completely stop working for any reason let your agent know as this could drastically reduce your insurance premium.

Cut way back on your driving. Use public transportation whenever possible. If you can reduce your driving to under 500 miles per month many companies will give you a rather substantial Low Mileage Discount.

Ask your agent if there is a discount on your premium if you buy (and use) a steering wheel locking device or if you install an inexpensive device that disables your fuel pump unless you press a secret button every time you start your car.

Drivers under 25 can save quite a bit if they just stay in school and keep their grades up. A 3.0 grade point average will earn young drivers a Good Student Discount.

Drivers over 55 may be able to shave a respectable 10% off their monthly premium if they pass a special driver's refresher course that some insurance companies offer. See if your company offers this discount.

Some cars cost a lot more to insure than others. If you are planning on getting a new car talk to your agent first about the cost of insuring the make and model you have your eye on. Better yet, ask your agent for a list of vehicles which cost the least to insure and make your choice from among those.

Can you afford to increase your deductible? Increasing your deductible is a sure-fire way of lowering your monthly premium payment, but don't promise to pay more than you can actually afford - remember, if you ever have a claim you'll have to come up with your deductible in cash before your vehicle will be repaired.

Lastly, find at least 3 websites that permit you to compare the cost of automobile insurance between different insurance companies. Using the information you have gathered from this article fill out the forms on at least 3 different websites, being careful to put the exact same information onto all three websites. In this way you make certain that you are comparing the same automobile insurance policy all 3 times.

From here it's easy. Review all of the prices your comparisons provided you and simply choose the best price. That's really all you need to do in order to compare low cost automobile insurance in Massachusetts and walk away the financial winner!
